Episode 306 - Number One Mom!
Spring Table
Say it with china
Here's a great idea for a Mother's Day brunch table, a meal that will be a bridge club story for years to come! As Mother's Day always coincides with spring time, I took my inspiration for my tribute to the Number-One-Mom from the many colours of spring.

The night before my highly anticipated brunch I set my table for six guests: me, my four sisters, and, of course, my mom! I covered the table with a crisp, clean, white linen tablecloth, placing padding underneath to protect the table. For the china service, I used a combination of two different 'spring-like' patterns: one by Bernadaud called "Sparte" which has a bold yellow border with a flower in the centre of each plate; the other pattern was Lombardy by Royal Crown Derby fine bone china, which had a scalloped edge and tiny blue dots which remind me of forget-me-nots.

For glassware, I used beautifully patterned Waterford crystal champagne flutes, water goblets for sparkling water, and wine glasses for the Chardonnay I intended to serve. I also set aside some crystal champagne saucers for Mom's favourite dessert!

For flatware, I used one of the most beautiful patterns I've ever had the pleasure to put on my table. It was the elaborate sterling pattern of Marley by Christofle, placed inverted on the table to reveal the filigree on the back of each piece. The most formal setting… do you think I'd do any less for my mom?

As formal as I wanted the table to be, I had to consider the typically relaxed atmosphere which ensues when my family gets together, so I didn't get too elaborate with the napkin fold. I used starched white napkins and folded them over into rolls, placing one on each side plate.

I finished off the table with accessories that I know are special to my Mom: silver frames as place-cards, an arrangement of her favourite flowers, as well as gardenia corsages for everybody. As I had prepared all of this the night before the big event, it allowed me to bring down the stress level and get a good night's sleep so that I could be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for my family's arrival the next day!
